Hello,
I was able to help a fellow collector of these pistols find the matching slide to his mismatched PP. His mismatched PP had an odd earlier modified slide to it that appears to have been assembled like that from the factory when it was captured by the Americans. It is not known what this slide was modified for as it’s really weird. It appears to have the later phosphate finished safety/hammer drop lever installed, indicating late war assembly (it is possible someone after the war put that phosphate lever in the slide, but I don’t think so personally).
So, seeing this, I checked the p38forum’s late Walther PP serial number listings as I contribute and search for these guns all the time.
Sure enough, I found that the matching slide pistol had been reported and not too long ago by me. I found that the matching slide gun was still for sale on the gunbroker website where I had seen it. I notified the owner and he was able to win the matching gun to put with his mismatched pistol.
If you have or see one of these late PP’s, post it up. It helps. Also, if you know what that modification might have been for, we’d like to know.
