G.29/40 660 1939 Radom Crest Kriegsmarine rifle

Alright broke this rifle down today and checked everything out. This rifle G29/40 is all matching besides the trigger, front trigger guard screw, and the barrel band spring. It does have some very interesting Polish parts used in production of this rifle. The trigger sear has two sets of numbers on it. The bolt has what looks too be Polish markings under the bolt handle. The rear sight base has alot of interesting Polish markings too as well as the sight slider. I also think its neat that the receiver isn't marked with a G for G.29/40 either. That just lined at the Wz marking and didn't put the G on it. Other then that I tired too take alot of detail pictures of this rifle for research and data. Have too say I really like this rifle and I don't usually collect Steyr. But this piece is an interesting oddball thats untouched and very hard too find in this condition. And who would have thought the first dealer passed on this rifle because it wasn't minty enough!

So nice. Mine is a bolt MM save trigger like yours (#25, e/77)...common? Came with an Imperial straight bolt so I put a Norwegian Steyr bolt into in.

Crest, 1939, crossed out wz, DOT stock. Pencil date in stock; 28th week, 1940, ~late June.

I don't know if it's a common term among collectors, but I call your rifle G.29/40 Variant 1. Thanks to Craig and you for the example pictures:

According to my observations you find Variant 1 at rifles marked "660 1939" with Radom Crest until late "c" block, the Variant 2 start either in very late "c" or very early "d" block. I just know Variant 3 at new made receivers, marked with "660 1940" ("NL", "a", "b", "c" and "d" block) without Radom Crest.

I have good news for you, your rifle is all matching besides the band spring and front trigger guard screw. The trigger is factory original, the number "24" is a common trigger marking and has nothing to do with the rifle serial number. The trigger sear is marked with the serial number "53" on the left side and the "30" underneath is a factory marking which has also nothing to do with the rifle serial number. I'm pretty sure also Craig's Variant 2 rifle has the number "24" at the trigger, maybe he has a photo of it.

Like you said, the G.29/40 and in particular Variant 1, are very hard too find in this condition. In Norway they captured a lot G.29/40 and they are usually in quite good condition, but unfortunately reworked to M/98k F1 in .30-06 Springfield. Just a few was used in the the Norwegian Navy with the designation M/98k in original condition, they are still in 7,92x57 and have only added "KNM" and the new Norwegian serial number on the left side of the receiver ring.

Thanks for the great add as usual Stephan. I wondered where the 'cut' line was. A few interesting things to me. Seems like all these pieces were scooped up off the assembly floor at Radom based on how they were inspected. On the bolt alone I count 3 x e/77 plus a FP. Looks like the only metal parts from Steyr are the barrel and bayo lug and the lumber. Super interesting and of course your pictures didn't disappoint either.

I should have said 'finished by Steyr' regarding the barrel to be correct since it's really made by Böhler.

I also noticed Ham's rifle is just over 8000 later in production and already they're running out of parts from the Radom raid specifically both bands and possibly the recoil lug (Jordan didn't show his acceptance )

You know since this is the second extremely rare rifle I have bought this year I wonder if I'll come across the legendary 1936 BSW!

Also wanted to say I'm happy to show ever detail I can on this rifle. It really opens up interesting fields in our research and data. And if I can help contribute to that I will gladly do it.

Oh I think you're helping! I definitely appreciate all the photos you take and enjoy looking at them. It's disappointing when someone has an original and rare rifle and then posted like 5 obscure photos and no details.

Stephan, I had thought that these were intermixed with respect to serial letter blocks. Do you believe the German receiver marked G.29/40 were their own new production run?
