Recent discovery from the Eastern front, Karabiner 88 muzzle cover, but not as usually, brass. But made from steel. Have these been seen before?

This Fliegerkorn was found on an Eastern front, near Riga, positions of 1916-1917. I was researching what we have found and I've had a feeling that it is something special. Spent about a year searching what it is and finally found this post. This was a reason for me to register. Thank You ...
