Interwar Sporter rescue

I had picked up this sporter built between the wars from a Kar98a metal only no wood. I found a nice Bishop stock for a large ring 98 for $115 and dropped it into that. needed to mill out wood to fit in the set trigger assembly. I'll be cutting some old walnut I have and using that to fill in the gap for the large ring receiver. The only thing I have left to do is address some of the rust on the metal and fill in the two holes from the sling swivels that were on the stock originally. Otherwise I'm calling this restoration complete.

Here is the inletting I had to do for the set trigger assembly. I basically took a 1/8" router bit, locked it up in my drill press and then locked the stock into a vise on rollers. set the height of the drill press and began milling it out a little at a time to accommodate the differing heights of the springs and triggers. In addition to that I also drilled the rear action screw hole larger to accommodate the steel tube from the rear action hole from a 98k.

It shot well in the initial test before I found a stock for it so I expect that it should perform well. The barrel is free floated in this stock and the action sits better. I'm going to take it out Tuesday and try it out.

I thinks it's absolutely gorgeous- now I want one!!

Was hoping to get it to the range Tuesday but didn't make it, going tomorrow afternoon so hopefully I can post a range report tomorrow night.

My 1940 made sporter has the caliber 8X57 NORM on it. Is this 8mm Mauser?
